Global Parametrics Launches Climate Protection for Rural Women Farmers in India

Prime Highlights:

  • Global Parametrics and Frontier Markets launch a women-focused parametric insurance program to protect rural farmers’ crops from climate risks.
  • The program uses local networks and automatic payouts, making financial support faster, easier, and accessible to remote women-led households.

Key Facts:

  • The insurance covers farmers in four districts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh for excess rain and drought during the Rabi season (Nov 2025 – Apr 2026).
  • In November 2025, the program successfully triggered payouts in 14 locations, directly helping affected women farmers.

Background:

Global Parametrics, part of the CelsiusPro Group, has teamed up with Frontier Markets to provide women farmers in India with a special type of insurance. The program helps small women farmers protect their crops and income from bad weather.

The insurance helps farmers in four districts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. It automatically pays them if there is too much rain or drought during the Rabi season (Nov 2025–Apr 2026).

Frontier Markets uses its Meri Saheli App and a network of local women entrepreneurs called “Super Sahelis” to reach women farmers in remote areas. This ensures that even those who usually do not have access to financial services can get protection for their crops.

The program has already worked well. In November 2025, payouts were made in 14 locations for excess rain, with money given directly to the affected farmers. This means the program can reach more farmers in India.

Funding for the initiative comes from the Natural Disaster Fund (NDF), managed by Global Parametrics through its Technical Assistance Facility. The NDF is supported by the UK government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and Germany’s development bank KfW, with additional risk-sharing support from Hannover-Re.

To ensure affordability for vulnerable farmers, Humanity Insured provides critical premium subsidies. Go Digit General Insurance provides coverage, and Howden Re India helps set up the plan.
