Key Background:

Thursday buzzed with activity at the Legacy Retirement Residence in South Jordan as a vibrant and touching fashion show as residents, staff, and family members united to celebrate Mother’s Day in a creative and lasting way. The residence marked its third consecutive Mother’s Day fashion show, a well-loved tradition that allows senior residents to be themselves through fashion and experience meaningful socialization.

The contest, introduced by marketing director Leilani Palmer in 2005, is now a popular activity. Colors of a party such as balloons, flowers, and a runway lit up for a nighttime illumination helped to set the overall ambiance that was both festive and sociable. Models struck poses with a variety of clothing from wedding gowns to travel, sunny-season wear and even a cowboy-style outfit evoking rodeo themes.

It begins months beforehand for those residents. Others, like resident Gloria Mackey, look forward to the shopping excursion to purchase their dress-up attire. “My favorite thing was going and shopping for our new clothes. We went to J.C. Penney’s and got to pick what we wanted,” she said. The excursions are not solely about fashion—there is the potential for seniors to socialize, create their own style of fashion, and be an integral part of society.

The activity also emphasizes the home’s commitment to resident engagement and well-being. A extremely generous $500 donation from Mountain America was applied to clothing and decorating costs, representing the community’s involvement and support. The show concluded with music, photos, and light refreshments, creating a long-lasting memory for all.

Finally, the fashion show is a celebration of dignity, joy, and solidarity honoring grandmothers and mothers and confirming the rich lives sustained at the retirement home. It’s a reminder that fashion, celebration, and love have no expiration date.
