Key Background :

Virat Kohli said goodbye to Test cricket, ending an 14-year-long grand career in which he proved himself to be one of the all-time greats. Kohli started his Test career in 2011 and represented India in Tests for 123 matches with 9,230 runs at 46.85. Kohli hit 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries with solidity and aggressive batting by him transforming the image of Indian batting in the modern era.

Kohli as a captain built an attacking and fitness culture around Indian cricket. Kohli became Test captain in 2014 and led India in 68 Tests and won 40—the Indian record for an Indian captain in the format. Kohli guided India to two World Test Championship final and set records away-from-home series victories against Australia, one after the other, in 2018-19 and 2020-21.

Kohli’s Australian travails were the longest spells of his Test career. He had amassed 2,232 runs against Australia and possessed nine Test hundreds, seven of them against Australia itself. His away record, particularly in difficult conditions, transformed him into a world phenomenon and superstar. He imparted to the team a war-hardened ethos and made India an all-weather team.

His decision arrives in the same game, Indian cricket transition phase retirement of Rohit Sharma. Though the Board of Control for Cricket in India attempted to convince him to continue via the English series, Kohli refused, announcing that he had “given everything to the format.” While his recent performance was slightly disappointing, otherwise his career is one of the most successful Indian cricket history.

Virat Kohli would remain on the field to feature in One-Day Internationals and the Indian Premier League, while his fans are assured of increased cricketing greatness in the shortest format of the game.
