Significant Background :

Tata Motors is bringing back its legendary Sierra SUV, a car that occupies a niche position in Indian automotive history. First showcased as a concept at the 2020 Auto Expo and then refreshed in 2023, the production-spec is now set to be launched in FY2026. The company will launch the electric variant first, followed by a regular internal combustion engine (ICE) variant, with the aim of targeting a broad segment that encompasses both green and mass-market car buyers.

The Tata Sierra EV will be based on the Acti.EV platform, the company’s Gen2 electric vehicle platform, also the foundation for upcoming models like the Harrier EV. The electric Sierra will boast a range of around 500 km, with fast-charging and enhanced connectivity features. Design-wise, the Sierra will boast unique cues like the curved glass rear-side windows and aggressive SUV stance, along with modern touches like full-width LED DRLs, dual-tone alloys, and smooth body lines.

Inside, there is a lavish cabin ambiance with double floating screens, a new four-spoke steering wheel, touch-sensitive controls, and a panoramic sunroof. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and other intelligent safety tech should also be part of the package, which will position the SUV competitively in the market. In ICE trims, Tata will likely equip the Sierra with a 2.0-litre diesel engine that produces around 168 bhp and 350 Nm of torque, and a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with similar power but lesser torque. Both the engines will likely come with 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions. With its promise of heritage-inspired design, new technology, and diverse powertrain options, the Tata Sierra will be a big splash in India’s expanding SUV market.
