Background:

Emma Guy, co-founder and editor of the Leicester Gazette, has won the 2025 Georgina Henry Award from Women in Journalism, securing £4,000 to fund media literacy workshops across her city.

The award, named after the former Guardian deputy editor and founder of the campaigning group, will support Subtext, an educational charity focused on media literacy, human rights, and social issues. Subtext will collaborate with the Leicester Gazette to deliver a Midlands-wide program, targeting young people and communities that are often hard to reach.

Judges praised the project for addressing one of today’s biggest challenges: misinformation. “This project provides practical solutions to improve understanding among young people and excluded communities,” they said.

Emma said she was “overwhelmed, speechless and honoured” to receive the award. “Amidst a landscape of misinformation, harmful online content, media bias, and increasing tensions between communities, Subtext will educate, amplify, and campaign alongside those most affected in their communities,” she added.

Subtext will operate from the same office space as the Leicester Gazette and is set to launch in early 2026. Rachel Corp, chair of Women in Journalism, highlighted how the Georgina Henry Award supports innovative and meaningful journalism and encouraged women across the UK to share their ideas.
