Background:
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has started the SHAKTI Scholars Fellowship to help young researchers study issues affecting women. The program supports research that can improve policies and create positive change for women across India.
The fellowship is open to students and young researchers who want to study women’s issues such as safety, gender-based violence, legal rights, workplace harassment, leadership, health, education, economic opportunities, and work-life balance.
Applicants must be Indian citizens aged 21 to 30 with at least a bachelor’s degree. Preference will be given to those doing or having completed postgraduate or higher research studies. Independent researchers with substantial research experience are also encouraged to apply.
Selected fellows will get a grant of Rs 1 lakh for six months, paid in installments based on their research progress. Applications can be sent to the NCW by email before 5:30 PM on December 31st. An expert committee will review the applications, and shortlisted candidates will be called for an online interview.
The NCW said the fellowship aims to generate new ideas that can be turned into practical policies to benefit women in different areas. By supporting research led by young people, the commission wants to encourage innovation, critical thinking, and solutions for important women’s issues.
This fellowship comes after the NCW recently launched a 24×7 helpline (14490) to help women in distress. The commission has asked citizens, social groups, and educational institutions to spread the word about both the helpline and the fellowship.
The SHAKTI Scholars Fellowship is an important step in empowering young researchers and promoting gender equality, women’s safety, and inclusive development across India.
