Mamaearth Founder Ghazal Alagh advised women entrepreneurs to build businesses designed to last, scale effectively and generate lasting value, while speaking at the FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) Hyderabad Chapter’s session titled “From Idea to IPO, Building Beyond Boundaries” at Hotel Daspalla.
Corporate leader Dr. Suman Rangabhashyam moderated the conversation, which brought FLO Hyderabad members and entrepreneurs together.
Alagh linked Mamaearth’s beginnings to her own experience of becoming a mother, pointing out that parenting comes with no instruction manual, unlike most gadgets people buy.
She recalled taking customer calls with her baby in her arms during the company’s early days, and said that modest start has since grown into one of India’s top beauty and personal care firms, now employing thousands.
Neither Alagh nor her co-founder had a background in FMCG, and she pointed to picking a category with little competition as central to the company’s growth, alongside solving a real consumer problem and executing it well.
She told entrepreneurs to raise capital only once the business genuinely needs it, since investors look for proof a company can scale, not just a good idea.
When investing, Alagh weighs a startup’s category, business model, financial numbers and the founders’ credibility. She said the startup space has opened up more for women in recent years, encouraging entrepreneurs to trust their own judgment. She also compared her time judging Shark Tank India with sitting on company boards, saying board work proves far tougher than pitching to Sharks.
FLO Hyderabad Chairperson Seetha Reddy opened the event, describing entrepreneurship as a path built on resilience and innovation. She additionally flagged a land allotment the chapter secured from the state government.
