The Indian Air Force’s elite Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment has produced its first woman graduate, with Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth completing the demanding Fighter Combat Leader course at the Gwalior-based institution, widely known as the force’s “Top Gun” school.
Only about 1% of IAF pilots earn a place in the Fighter Combat Leader course at TACDE, making Kanth’s achievement a rare feat. The 20-week programme sharpens pilots in advanced combat tactics and prepares them to lead fighter squadrons in complex missions.
Kanth ranks among the first three women fighter pilots the IAF commissioned, joining Avani Chaturvedi and Mohana Singh as Flying Officers in June 2016. Her latest milestone builds on that pioneering entry into the force’s fighter stream.
The achievement follows closely behind another milestone for IAF women officers. Squadron Leader Saanya also became the first woman to earn the Category-A Qualified Flying Instructor rating, the force’s highest instructional qualification for military pilots.
The Cat-A rating goes only to seasoned instructors capable of training other instructors and assessing their flying skills, a status that demands extensive flying hours, advanced technical knowledge and evaluation by senior IAF examiners.
Kanth’s FCL course exposed her and her coursemates to the shifting nature of modern warfare, including the expanding role of unmanned systems and long-range precision-strike weapons in combat operations.
TACDE develops tactical procedures across aircraft types, builds standard operating procedures and trains pilots in combat doctrines, earning its reputation as the institution that sharpens the Air Force’s operational edge.
The establishment also evaluates newly inducted fighter aircraft, radar systems and weapons platforms before drafting the SOPs and combat manuals used across the IAF.
Beyond the Fighter Combat Leader course, TACDE runs the Helicopter Combat Leader course and the Master Fighter Controller course, with a training framework spanning air-to-air and air-to-ground operations, electronic warfare and surface-to-air coordination.
