From her early educational days, Dr Vidya Jha looked at doctors as more than healthcare professionals. “I like challenges, and during MBBS, I was captivated by the detective-like nature of pathology, solving medical mysteries and providing crucial answers that guide patient care,” she says.
So, during her post-graduation, Dr Vidya opted for Pathology, which is considered the backbone of medicine at one of India’s biggest government hospitals, Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, hoping to make a tangible difference in healthcare, bridging the gap between diagnosis and treatment, and ultimately improving patient outcomes. After having witnessed the huge number of daily footfalls at Safdarjung Hospital and thousands of tests being run daily, Dr Vidya also became inclined towards hospital administration and became interested in streamlining the various processes that patients undergo in hospitals.
Dr Vidya’s journey began earlier in 2001 when she joined Calcutta National Medical College in Kolkata. During those MBBS days, she gained hands-on experience in clinical laboratories, dissecting cadavers, and conducting experiments. Clinical rotations in hospitals and clinics provided opportunities to observe and assist with patient care under the supervision of her seniors and teachers.
Revealing her source of inspiration, Dr Vidya says that the biggest motivation to become a doctor came from her family. Her parents and sisters put all their effort into supporting her in studying medicine. “Even now, when I wish to upgrade my skills, my husband supports me. My mother is my biggest cheerleader. I am truly blessed to have such a supporting family,” she adds.
Today, the MBBS, MD, MHA, PGDMLE, multitalented Dr Vidya excels in various positions such as the Deputy Medical Superintendent and Medical Administrator, Laboratory Director, Associate Professor, and Chief of the Cytogenetics lab and Advanced Centre for Clinical Genomics at the well-renowned Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Kochi, Kerala, India.

Her team also integrates Diagnostic Data Management Systems, leveraging advanced analytics to identify trends, enhance accuracy, and contribute to healthcare innovations.

As a Pathologist, Dr Vidya has successfully established the Cytogenetics lab and the Advanced Centre for Clinical Genomics at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS). AIMS is the only diagnostic lab in Kerala to perform Microarray and NGS based testing for cancers, hereditary disorders, prenatal samples and other diseases. Her work in molecular diagnostics has significantly improved the accuracy and efficiency of disease detection, enabling early intervention and better patient outcomes. It also empowers patients and their families who understand their genetic risks and make informed decisions about their healthcare.

Dr Vidya recalls, “We utilized our telemedicine platform to offer remote consultations, ensuring that medical advice was accessible even in hard-to-reach locations. The experience also reinforced our commitment to disaster management and community service, ensuring that they are better equipped to handle future challenges.” AIMS set up a 24-hour call-in rescue helpline to assist flood victims. Within the first five days, the helpline fielded over 25,000 calls, connecting more than 100,000 flood victims with appropriate relief services.
